Whitney Justesen skillfully operates a scanner to tell creative stories with her photographs. Her self-portraits portray a young girl experiencing a variety of emotions. Some images are soft and peaceful, others are playful, and a few demonstrate the emotional turmoil of an intense young girl. The artist purposefully switches between black and white, which conveys an emotional drama, and rich, saturated colors that convey calm and intriguing narratives.
To make this series of photographs, Justesen lugged a bag of props over to a friend’s house to borrow the scanner and to experiment with all kinds of expressions and poses. She says, “I might have had a little bit too much fun making these scans, but I think I came away with some great photos! I will definitely be trying this process again in the future.”
